Board room table with 7 empty chairsWhatever the goals may be, creating and maintaining momentum is fundamental to achieving success. Generating momentum requires getting new team members to work hand in hand with experienced team members so that everyone is working towards the same goals at the same speed.

Here are five simple solutions to motivate you team.

Have Your Business Objectives Clearly Defined

Determine what you want your team to accomplish this month, this quarter and this year. Be as specific as possible. Simply saying that you want to increase sales by year’s end gives your employees nothing concrete to strive for. Instead, use specifics such as one new contact each day or five new customers a month.

Get Attention

Paint a colourful picture of what will happen in the future as a result of a new commitment, strategy or expansion. Actions speak volumes. Share your goals with them and then live the goals as if they are really happening. Demonstrate that you’re committed. Include your sales team in the success of the organisation and show you are willing to support them achieve that success.

Every one is a Star

Your staff must see, feel, and smell success! Put the results the experienced team members are attaining up front; Breath new life into the experienced professional with the unique approaches and enthusiasm new staff bring to the mix. One way to accomplish this is to build a Wall of Fame for your team. Every few hours, let your employees post their own numbers and/or accomplishments. If you sell big ticket items have a bell that gets rung every time an order is taken.

Celebrate Success!

Give your employees a pat on the back or even a simple thank you for every sale they make. Any time a new person makes a sale, give him or her public recognition in front of the entire team. Do this consistently day in and day out and the majority of your organization will strive to get the recognition.

Develop leaders

Throughout the momentum building process give your experienced sales professionals a bigger picture of the company’s goals. Encourage them to take the lead and mentor the newer employees so everyone can achieve the goals together.

Greg – great post and you are spot on. Employers need to think outside the box and keep their employees motivated in order for them to achieve the best on their behalf. It’s important to note that employee motivation does not have to be purely financial. A work/life balance and non financial freebies are always welcome winners!

I would add the need to develop persistence as an habit; success seldom comes quick and easy, and a lot of people give up just because they cannot persist in what they do.

Get the people stuff right… Too many business owners and bosses get everything right except the people stuff… and they fail. Your biggest challenge in business (unless you’re flying solo) will not be about marketing, business models, your competition or corporate logo.. it will be about egos, attitudes, personalities, opinions, emotions and politics – people. If you can’t communicate, listen, manage, lead, resolve conflict and laugh…. don’t employ people.

Some great tips there, but like many motivational speakers/writers before, I miss the hint of an answer to the problem mentioned early in the post: “Problem is though, in a lot of organisations some teams don’t always achieve their goals.” How do you handle and recover from missed goals and failures?

I take your point, Stig. How do you handle and recover from missed goals and failures? There is not a simple solution to this, and it comes down to creating wins relating to the emotional needs of the individual. This is a topic of itself. I call them the seven emotional styles – others have different names. I can’t post on this site – but send me your details and I will email you an overview.
