For businesses of any size, a website can be a valuable tool for connecting with existing customers, attracting new ones, and even selling products to help grow your revenue. For a small business, a website can help expand your business well beyond a local physical location, and allow you to use tools and technologies to be more competitive with larger rivals and better serve your customers.

Even A Small Local Business Can Take Advantage
While having a web presence can make your business global, there are benefits even if you are just a small local business with no desire of expanding. Having a website can make it easier for local consumers to find you, and provide another channel for getting in touch and sharing information. With your current customers, potential customers, and competition all already online, it is critical that your business has some form of web presence in order to stay competitive, relevant, and visible.

Websites Come in Many Forms
There are many paths that your business can take for a website, depending on your strategic goals. If you merely want to use the web to attract customers to your physical store, then it’s often enough to have a website that provides basic background information on your business, a catalogue of your products, descriptions of your services, and methods for visitors to contact and find your place of business. If you are interested in selling products online then you can create an eCommerce website that can act as an extension of your physical store, or even do away with the store completely and operate 100% online.

Your Website Must Be Professionally Made
Whether you use your website as a sales or marketing tool, it is important that it is designed as professionally as possible as it will represent your business on the web, and have a direct impact on your reputation. With that said, while it is possible to develop a website on your own, it is often a better choice to get assistance from web development professionals. They will have the experience and expertise to ensure that your business website is designed as best as possible, and is easy-to-use and error free. In most cases, there are likely many web development companies in your local area that can be contacted to help with your website.

You Don’t Need To Be Skilled With Technology To Get Online
While creating and operating a website may seem like a far too complex task and best left to businesses with strong grasps on technology, it is in fact easier than ever for any kind of business to get involved. Web development professionals are available to help design your website, and other providers exist that handle all the technical issues and infrastructure necessary for operating a website. This is beneficial to any business, but especially for a small business that often operates under the constraints of limited time, resources, and capabilities. You can gain all the advantages of having a website without losing any attention to your core activities or adding any more hassle to your already busy business.

Your Web Presence Is An Important Part of Your Business
In order to be most successful it is important that your website is treated as a core aspect of your business, through such ways as making it a part of both your online and offline marketing efforts, and by using it to drive sales either directly with eCommerce, or indirectly by using it as an information source to entice purchases. For best results, be sure that your website is informative and valuable to your audience, and supported with multimedia and other tools such as social media to make for as rich an experience as possible. With a bit of attention and upkeep your website can become an important part of your business that can build exposure, sales, and grow your overall success.

It is a well known fact that Twitter can generate more traffic to your website. More traffic as we know means more conversions, more conversions of subscribers or sales. So it behooves us to understand how we can get more followers in Twitter. Here are a number of tips that will help you get more followers.

1. Bio

Make sure you take the time to compose a Twitter bio that will portray the message that you want others to know about you. What do you want them to know about you that are pertinent to your online business or other wards? Your bio will inspire people to follow you or not. Take the time to make it count.

2. Tweet

Have you made any tweets before following people and hoping they will follow you back? Besides a bio that tells people about you or your business you should have some tweets that will also inspire confidence in you. Your tweets should be about your business. Links to your website or an article you wrote to show who you are.

3. Build rapport

Many people make the mistake to just sell to the people that follow you on Twitter. You want to build a relationship. If you write or find articles that will benefit your followers tweet them. If you find humor or other things that you think your followers could enjoy or benefit from then tweet them. Links to YouTube videos or other helpful resources are good.

4. Captivate

Your tweet should be captivating like the headline of an article or the subject line of an email. Show that you can grab people’s interest. Since you have a limited number of characters you can use you should shorten your links. We will discus programs that will help with your Twitter account in another tip.

5. “Share the Love”

Re-tweet other people’s tweets and some will return the favor, which will expose you to other people who may then decide to follow you. When people do re-tweet your tweets then you should thank them. It only takes a minute to click a button and say thank you.

6. Reply to people’s tweets

Give them a compliment or thank them for sharing. These people may also decide to send you @ messages, which will also make their followers aware of you. Remember that you are part of a community and you can build valuable relationships.

7. Follow the rules

Follow all of Twitter’s rules about following and un-following. Don’t become too aggressive or your account will be suspended. Try to keep to a 1 to 1.5 ratio.

8. Don’t spam!

Don’t be known as a spammer. If you plan on using Twitter to market something, try to keep a ratio of about one marketing message for every 10 or so tweets. If all you do is try to sell people something, they will stop following you. Doing nothing but marketing tweets could get you labeled as a spammer, which could result in being banned. Remember Twitter is about being social first and then if you do any marketing, second.

9. Use software

If you are using Twitter to market then look into software to do your Twitter work for you. There is one free website that can really help you use Twitter with more efficiency, Hootsuite.com. This service will post Tweets to a number of services for you. You will also be able to schedule your tweets so you can take your time to set up a day’s worth or more of tweets.

10. Targeted followers

There are a number of paid software programs that will find targeted followers for you based on keyword or associations. It will manage the following and unfollowing of the people so you won’t have to go through hundreds and thousands of emails clicking on the follow link. You can schedule tweets and much more. Review a number of these programs, automate Twitter and save your time.

Now over to you – are you having success with Twitter? Share your experiences!

In an effort to improve the reach of Google Adwords, Google now have ‘interest categories’ to enable advertisers to target consumers based on their previous search behavior and history.

As an advertiser on Google Adwords you can now allocate what categories of interest you would like to target and can tailor your ads specifically to them. There are over 1000 categories which allocate consumers based on the types of websites that they generally visit, the frequency of these visits and how recent their visits were.

In tests of the new system (which Google ran over two years) some advertisers experienced great results with better brand lift and/or greater conversions at a lower cost per sale. The product manager at Google’s Display Network, Jon Krafcik on the Google Adwords blog has described the new interest categories as a great new tool for advertisers, saying “We think you’ll find them an effective way to reach more interested users, increase awareness of your products and services and ultimately drive more sales”

This new service follows the successful Facebook advertising model; however with Google’s broad reach its impact could be substantial.

There are some clear winners and losers. The winners include display network advertisers who were maxing out their impressions and wanted a greater advertising opportunity as well as publishers who wanted more advertisers competing for a slot on their page. The losers include “advertisers who are showcasing on the display network at a smaller scale, advertisers who want to pay the absolute minimum for clicks or impressions, and users who want to see a wider variety of ad types.”

So what does this mean for you a Google Adwords Advertiser? More testing and reviewing! My suggestion would be to go into your Google Adwords campaigns and take note of the analytics. What are your current CPC (cost per click) and the percentage of conversions from impressions and of course the resulting sales/enquiry figures to see the outcome of this advertising. Then try a new campaign with interest categories and within a week, fortnight or month review your figures to see if it is helping improve your CPC, your conversion rate and your sales/enquiry rate. You may find that your campaigns worked better on the previous model without the categories or you may find that certain products/services suit the new model better and others get a better result without categories. As a business you need to continually review your Adwords campaigns and modify them based on market changes, analytics and the key messages you want to focus on.

A domain name is a unique identifier that represents you and your business on the internet. So if you don’t have a website do you really need one? Absolutely!

It is essential your business secures an online presence. Putting the technical jargon aside, a domain name does this by giving you an exclusive address on the internet. The domain is most commonly used to identify your website and email address but can also be used for other specialised online functions.

It goes without saying that the domain name you pick must match your business and your brand. The name that you use to advertise your products and services is the name that you will want.

There are several different types of domain names and in our case the most popular would be the .COM and the .COM.AU.

The .COM is the most recognised and popular type of domain and can be freely bought and sold by anybody. This domain type is recognised globally and should be considered the equivalent of the prime real-estate on the internet.

The .COM.AU identifies the domain entity as being based in Australia and of which an ABN, ACN or ARBN are required to register the domain name. There are also other requirements that can be found on the AUDA (Australian Domain Name Administrator) website. The AUDA are an organisation that manages and governs the .AU namespace and ensures all rules and policies are enforced.

In today’s world finding out that the domain name you want not being available is quite common. There are many domain marketplaces such as www.netfleet.com.au which can facilitate the trade of domain names. Other options may be to look to other domain types such as .BIZ, .NET and the new .CO that is set to become the next .COM. If your .COM.AU domain name is not available and you believe that the current owner does not meet the domain ownership requirements, you can lodge a complaint with AUDA who have the authority to cancel domain registrations

When registering your domain name make sure you also include email and website hosting. You may also want to enquire about DNS (Domain Name System) Management if your business operations are more advanced (Canonical Name, Sub Domains, Other Servers hosted elsewhere).

All in all a domain name gives you an online presence and is the gateway for customers to reach you. My advice would be to try to align the domain name to the business name as much as possible and make it memorable, short and easy to remember. If you business has not yet progressed to having a website, secure your domain name for the future!

Webinar marketing is becoming increasingly popular and is a simple tool that you can use to attract new and retain existing customers.

Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings, training, or presentations via the Internet. In a web conference, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected remotely to other participants. This can be either a downloaded application on each of the attendees’ computers or a web-based application where the attendees access the meeting by clicking on a specific link.

There are three key steps you need to understand when running an effective webinar.

Step 1: Prepare

Preparing for your webinar is an essential step. Many business owners and marketing managers get this first step wrong. Initially, you need to ensure you have the right software for you. There are many software packages on the marketplace at the moment, so be sure to compare and benchmark before choosing one.

Once you have selected the software, you have to become comfortable in using the software. This shouldn’t take too long, and most software providers allow you to practice your webinar before running it live.

One of the key elements when it comes to preparing a great webinar is to ensure you get into the shoes of your prospect when putting it together. What does your target market want? Many people who fail at webinars don’t spend enough time on this. Its vital that you are extremely clear on exactly who will be on that webinar. The more specific the crowd you are looking to attract to your webinar the better it will be.

Its also vital that you spend a good amount of time designing your headline for your webinar and then 5-7 bullet points outlining the key benefits your webinar will provide. This alone could increase the number of people joining your webinar by substantially numbers and is in fact , the number one key to an effective webinar – even higher than creating great content!

When you have designed a catchy headline (that gets the attention of your target market), you then need to set a date and time in the future to run your webinar. Give yourself sufficient time to allow you to get the numbers you need. The ideal length for a great webinar ranges from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Step 2: Promote

You need to treat promoting a webinar like you would promoting any product or service. Its really important that you invest 2 to 3 hours creating a detailed marketing plan.

There are many ways you can promote a webinar. Here is a list of strategies

Existing contacts

Using existing contacts to refer others (its really easy to get an existing contact or friend to forward on an invitation to a catch webinar)

Advertise on your website

On other peoples websites

Joint Ventures (other people to market to their list)

Post card campaigns to existing lists or to cold lists

PR

Via your sales team

Upsell after product sales on websites

Blogging

Email marketing

Blogging to other peoples lists

Advertising in newsletters that go out to your target market

Online forums where you target market are hanging out

Direct mail campaign

Video blogging

Ask for referrals when people register (eg free gift if you enter in someone’s name that would benefit from the webinar)

When you have a number of strategies working for you, don’t be surprised with the number of attendees you will get onto your webinar.
Its vital that you also have a ongoing campaign once people register for your webinar. Just because they register, doesn’t mean they will show up. Send at least 3-5 contacts to keep them engaged and build some excitement around your webinar.

Step 3: Present:

There is a formula that when followed correctly, will result in running a great webinar.

Remember – less is best. Don’t complicate it with complicating slides. Keep it simple. Also, learn the COUNTRY formula:

C: Create Connection. The first step on any webinar is to connect with the people on your webinar. Meet them at their level. Remember to smile while your presenting. People can hear a smile. Have fun and be confident. Ensure your standing up when you deliver it
O: Open your customer up to being ok that you will offer the next step to them. Simply ask your customer (at the start of the webinar) that will be discussing the next steps. This one thing alone could double your conversion rates
U: Understand your customer. Keep engaging your customer with their challenges and talking to their dreams and gaols.
N: Need for your solution. Its important to help your client see how your product or service can fix their problem and why they need to buy from you
T: Tension. Reveal your product and build tension. Don’t rush the close of a webinar. Be confident when you reveal your product or service
R: Reveal your offer. Ensure you have a great offer for people on the webinar to take advantage of. Remember – we want them to take ACTION
Y: Yield the results from your webinar. Ensure you invite people to take action. Explain to them exactly what you want to do. If you don’t get the results you were after, then a follow up campaign in the days following the webinar can double conversions.

Running a webinar is really exciting. Its also a very easy process to follow, and like anything – once you have done one you will be amazed with just how easy it really is.

For the most part, our computers work effectively and tirelessly without much intervention from our part. There often comes a time however, when things don’t go quite as planned – In order to get back on your feet as quickly as possible – here are the top 5 things that all business owners should know about their own computers:

1. Administrator passwords

‘Local administrator accounts’ have full access to make changes to your computers. If you have a server, there may also be a ‘domain administrator’ account. Make sure you have a record of these account passwords in a safe place. If your business provides laptops and mobile phones to your staff, also keep a record of any passwords or PIN numbers that are used to secure these mobile devices (e.g. are prompted for when the device is turned on).

2. Domain name details

If you have your company name registered as a domain on the internet (e.g. for your website or email addresses), make sure you know when your domain is due to expire. Domain name registration only lasts for a certain period (commonly 1, 2 or 5 years) and must be renewed. We’ve seen websites and emails stop in their tracks because the domain name registration company couldn’t (or didn’t) contact the business owner to process the domain name renewal. Also associated with your domain name is a password or PIN number (sometimes known as a registry key). This proves you are the rightful owner of the domain and is required for making any changes. It’s a long process if you need to get this password reset because it’s been forgotten, so make sure it’s stored in a safe place.

3. Internet connection details

The modem that connects your computers to the internet is configured with some details that are specific to your account with your internet provider. This may be as simple as a username and password, but may also include security settings or even ‘port numbers’ for allowing or denying internet access to some software programs. If you have internet connection problems and the modem needs to be reset back to the factory defaults, this information will be lost. It can also happen due to a power failure or if the modem is faulty.

4. Last successful backup test

Your backups are only as good as your last successful data restoration test. If someone else manages your backups, ask them to regularly test that they can recover a random selection of your files and provide you with a monthly report so you know it’s been done. If you look after your own backups, make sure this testing is performed by someone in your company and that you receive a report from them to show when it happened.

5. Software licensing proof

Like the financial and taxation side of your business, the responsibility for legal software ownership rests with the business owner. Don’t think that you’re only a small business so no-one will audit you. Keep a safe record of your software license keys and proof of ownership (e.g. purchase receipts). This also makes license numbers easy to find if your computer software needs to be re-installed or moved to a different computer.

In any type of business, it’s very important to find as many ways as possible to attract more clients. On the internet today, there are numerous methods people in business can utilize to drive traffic to their website. But how do you keep track of how you’re doing online? One of the most helpful ways is Google Alerts.

Businesses of any size that operate mostly on the internet can benefit from using Google Alerts. This is another valuable service from the world’s leading search engine Google that is very easy to use.

What is Google Alerts?

Google Alerts is a notification or alert system that informs you every time Google finds a web page featuring your name, business name, your articles and relevant keywords. In fact, you can set an alert for any string of words you choose.

If you’re keen about monitoring where your business appears online or your articles are picked up by other sites in your specific niche, then it is worth your time to be using Google Alerts.

Google alerts can be found at www.google.com/alerts

How to Set Up Google Alerts

All you need is to set up a Google account and once you have your username and password ready, you can start using this effective alert system.

You can decide which types of alert you’d like to receive. There are six categories available such as news, blogs, web, comprehensive, video and groups. You can freely set up an alert for each category if you want.

As to the frequency of notifications sent to your mailbox, you can choose to get alerts once daily, as it happens or once every week. There is also another option that pertains to email length. In other words, you can decide if you’d like to receive up to 20 results or up to 50 results.

Normally, you would use keywords specific to your business when setting up a Google alert. You can create as many as a thousand alerts if you like. However, you may have to first delete some existing alerts or you can request that the notifications be sent to a separate email address.

Alerts are usually sent in an HTML format. However, you can choose to receive notifications in plain text only except for the video alerts. All you need to do is to go to the Manage Your Alerts page and change the format of the emails from the default HTML to just plain text and you’re done.

As an example, I’ve set up a Google Alert for Savvy Web Women and chose the category blogs. What happens then is that every time my business name appears in another blog, I get an alert. Whether it’s the article I wrote or an event I did that was posted on that particular blog, I am able to track who is sharing my content, utilising my resources and adding links back to my site.

So by using Google Alerts, you are able to find relevant back links to your site that search engines value most when ranking websites and blogs. This should be reason enough to inspire you to consistently promote yourself and your business on the internet. Once you’re consistent and with your alert system all set up, you can just let Google Alerts do the monitoring for you.

It ‘s 8am Monday morning and you receive a call from building management notifying you that a contractor has accidently cut a wrong cable and internet and telephony in your office are offline and potentially will be for days. What do you do?

You are probably thinking to yourself that this won’t happen to me…Right? Well it can and it most probably will if you don’t plan for it. Accidents happen all the time so it is essential you have some form of contingency plan in place to ensure that your business can operate during a disaster or long period of downtime.

Statistics –In the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, 150 businesses out of 350 affected failed due to no BCP. Also more than 40% of businesses affected by the September 11 World Trade Centre attacks did have some form of backup system in place but had no infrastructure or business premises to relocate and restore to.

A Business Continuity Plan (BCP) is a document that basically outlines how the businesses core functions are restored and how they will operate during a disaster or disruption. It outlines responsibilities, what to do, when to do it, where to go, how to get there and a time-line to do it in.

For a small business the creation of a BCP is critical and very important. The key to mastering and getting though a disaster is planning, organising, managing and taking control. Find below key points to include in a BCP

Identify any risks to the business

These may include floods, bushfires, power failures, and computer failures

Identify the core Systems in the business and prioritise

These are most likely computers, email, internet, telephones, website (ecommerce) and any specialised application used

Develop a recovery plan for the core systems in the business

Assistance from suppliers and IT are crucial as the majority of BCP involves recovering systems

Create a ‘BCP Team’ and create a chain of command and assign responsibilities

Create a communications plan for members in the team

Test the BCP Plan at regular intervals

Ensure proper maintenance is carried out to ensure that the BCP is valid and ready for a disaster

A BCP gives you the peace of mind knowing that you have some form of plan for any disaster or unscheduled outage that may occur. There are many cost effective solutions available for small business so you are never too small to shop around. Time is Money so make sure you invest some time to plan to continue to make money when the unthinkable occurs.

Nearly every business owner I have spoken too about Twitter, seems to be under the impression that the main objective is to get as many followers as you can. And blast your message out to them as often as possible.

I believe this thinking comes directly from the “get 100 hundred followers a day programs” that are popping up all over the place. Being that I have been on Twitter for over two years now, and also due to the fact that I was fortunate enough to learn how to use Twitter the correct way. I believe that this theory is seriously flawed!

What I am going to do for you in this article is explain exactly how I use Twitter for business, and how you can use Twitter to engage, interact and add value to the people you choose to follow. So that your business reaps some real benefits from you being on there.

Twitter is just a tool.

So it need to be used correctly to be effective. You wouldn’t try and cut a piece of wood with a hammer would you? Yet this is effectively what people are trying to do when they set their Twitter account up as an ATM (Automatic Tweeting Machine).

Twitter is a real time interaction tool. By that I mean that you will get the best results by actually sending all your tweets out personally, so that you can directly interact with people.

A great way to engage them is too find something that you have in common, sometimes it takes a little while but it is well worth the effort. Let me give you a great example of this that actually happened to me. I was working away one morning writing a blog post from memory, anyway the old brain got a bit distracted and I wandered over too ninemsn to see what was going on out in the real world. There was a story about a crocodile that had been trapped in a swimming hole where we used to swim as a family, when we lived in Darwin.

So I tweeted out the story something like I used to swim in this waterhole when I lived in Darwin! Within a couple of minutes I get an @ message back saying so you are a Darwin boy then? I went on to explain that I wasn’t, but built up a friendship with this person that has lead too me being invited to blog on the Coolum Beach site on the Sunshine Coast, as well as being asked to be a social media judge at an event in the future.

Twitter is also an exceptional tool for creating business connection’s, and getting around the gatekeeper who often ends up with your email’s! This is my number one Twitter tip…

If you want to speak directly to someone that you are have trouble contacting, see if they have a Twitter account. You see Twitter is a direct reflection of an individuals personality. Smart operator’s recognize this and rarely let the gatekeeper have access to their Twitter account. The added bonus is there are so many Twitter apps for phones, having some-one’s Twitter name is just as effective for contacting them as having their mobile number.

Never use Twitter as a sales tool unless…

It is someone you have known for a while and built up a friendship with or they specifically ask me to recommend a product to them.

Nothing is worse than someone trying to shove their products and services down your neck via Twitter.

Just wait until it happens to you the first time and you will know exactly what I am talking about!

Nowadays, more than one billion people around the world have mobile internet access through their mobile phones, iPads or other devices, and if you really want to get the most out of it for your business success, you need to dedicate resources to mobile customers by creating a mobile website.

How does it work?

A mobile website is a different version of your site; scaled and optimized for mobile devices with smaller screens. Mobile websites are more streamlined, because they are designed to load quickly over mobile data networks (sometimes closer in speed to ‘dial-up’ than broadband). They are also laid out with a tighter focus; what is the main action or actions you want people to be able to take? It makes it easier and more comfortable for users to browse around your mobile site.

In fact, many mobile websites offer special mobile services – like simply clicking on a phone number to make a call, or clicking on an address to see it pop up on a map. Anytime you can make it easier for potential customers to call or visit your location is a good thing!

For people who own mobile internet devices, you’d be surprised to find how few businesses actually have mobile websites. This is a chance to step out of the crowd and show customers you are forward-thinking and savvy enough to cater to all web users.

As an added benefit, if your competitors haven’t gone mobile yet, you can beat them to the punch – and become the go-to source for customers on the go.
