Great post Alfonso. I absolutely adore twitter and I use pretty much all of its functions... except for lists! I guess I've never been able to get my head around exactly what they're for, but this has given me some very useful ideas to get me started. Thank you.

Social media is a brilliant way to promote a small business and can be very cost effective. But it requires planning and consistent effort to really reap the benefits. I particularly love video as it has incredible SEO benefits as well (since Google loves it) and will often give you a first page listing far quicker than a blog post or article might do.

Good article Prabath. Lets not lose sight of the fact that having such freedom as in your own business, can't always be measured by a monetary value. You can't put a price on taking the kids to school, or having a break with a partner whenever you wish. The actual cost of these things is working a few more hours or an extra day. Many people forget that. Even if they do work longer hours, they are still fleixible hours. Something you dont get in a JOB.

As you say the list of tasks / goals are extremely important yet often overlooked by business owners. Do what you love and love what you do. When you work hearder or longer its directly for you and your business, dont be afraid of doing that. Dont measure success by putting a price on your time. Unless your a lawyer who makes $300 per hour it doesnt matter. you may be making $2.50 per hour if you bothered to value it up. But I will guarantee there are some unhappy lawyers, working in a firm and some very contented cleaners I know making much less. I wonder if Warren Buffet (2nd richest man on earth) knows how much his hourly rate is? I doubt he does or even cares.

I say keep trying, back yourself and you just might pull it off. You wouldnt have had a go if you didnt think it was possible to be the success you pictured. Put things in place though around insurances and investments when you can.

It is about prioritisation, focus on 2 - 3 things each quarter that will really make a difference for you (not others) and get them done.

Facebook business page needs to be in every small business marketing plan. Quality over quantity is the label on this blog absolutely. The best thing about this site is the clarity and excellence of prose in articles.

This happened to me at my first job although I wasn't consciously aware of it at the time. In an entry level job they kept expanding my responsibilities which I thought was a good thing then when a colleague left they decided to give me his workload instead of getting a new hire. At this point I felt it would be appropriate to ask for a payrise/promotion and drafted a document of all the responsibilities I had now that were outside the original job description. When they flat turned me down I left the company.
