    Question Flyers?

Hi, was wondering if anyone had experience using fliers? Particularly interested in how much they paid for them, how they were distributed and how successful they were.

We were thinking of targeting local businesses by researching them first then walking in and talking to them. I understand it's illegal to just pop them in people's letterboxes (although this seems to happen all the time) so we were planning to steer clear of that (not sure how effective it would be for us anyway).

Tried to attach an image of our draft flier but couldn't get it small enough without it being completely unhelpful so have uploaded to our site at http://peekwebdesign.com.au/wp-conte...2/01/flier.pdf It's designed for A5 size (one sheet) with a business card clipped to the front.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Dean,

First of all, it's perfectly legal to drop them into peoples letterboxes =) I think you may be getting confused with emails (where it is illegal).

    Design wise:

-Contact details, very, important!! I can see you have your web address, but from what I understand - your main target would be people who aren't currently that active online (about 2/3 of Australian Businesses) so chances are, they will want to phone, email or pop by for a visit.

    - I think the front of your flyer looks great - but the back is a little cluttered. A logical flow for reading would allow quicker skimming and give interested parties easier viewing.

    - A selling point on the front would be great - "Did you know Australians spent $xx billion online in 2011? Are you missing out on your share" or something similar to convince people they need a website.

    Campaign wise

    - When budgeting for this campaign - do NOT budget for just 1 drop. You will need to hit businesses about 2-3 (preferable more times) before you start seeing a good return on your investment. However, in saying that - I had a drop go out for a client last week and he has already had the letterbox drop pay for itself but his branding is established in the area. Customers will need to know and trust your brand before they but from you and they do this by seeing you multiple times.

    - You can have your flyers delivered with a private contractor or via Australia Post. If you opt for the former, they wil be delivered bundled with 5-15 other flyers and has a reduced chance of being read. The latter (via Australia Post) is delivered with regular mail (such as letters, bills, cards etc) and therefore has a MUCH higher chance of being read. It's slightly more expensive to go via Australia Post but 100% worth the investment.

    - Target your campaign - don't hit residential, make sure you hit only businesses.

Hope that helps =) If you'd like costing to have them printed and letter box dropped for you, please feel free to shoot through an email.

Oh, and on another note - A5 is a great size, as it sticks out slightly from regular mail and has more chance of getting noticed. (normally mail is typically DL sized) - however the distribution costs will be slightly more expensive.

Dean great start I agree with Jake Contact Details are a must! If it was me I would add the website of phone to the front as well as the back just incase they don't turn over and they are sold to call you from the cover!

Dot points on the back are great but need a bit of space and I do love that size being bigger.

And really like the personal deliver and talk option!

Thanks guys for the great feedback.

The idea was to have the business card clipped to it which would have all the contact info but it certainly makes sense to have it duplicated on the actual flyer to assist when the two are separated and we're thinking of following Jake's recommendation of using Aus Post for distribution (on top of walking into targeted businesses) so those ones will go without the business card. Also cut down the info on the back to unclutter it (update).

    Interesting stats I found:
    • Australians are set to spend over $13.6 billion online this financial year (A jump of 13% from 2010-11); and
    • Research shows 95 percent of consumers search the web for product information, price comparisons and peer reviews before making a purchase online; and
    • Over 65 percent of in-store purchases are initiated on the web

    Thanks Linda. Article is here

Not overly confident as to where they got that 65% stat regarding in-store purchases but hey, it sounds good!

Be sure that the shape of your flyer is interesting so that it attracts new prospects to your business. This will not only help in getting initial attention, but will also help in positioning your brand as a creative thought leader in your industry. So try to think of shapes that embody your line of work. Many times dentists will create a tooth or toothbrush shape, and chiropractors will display a spine. This helps create an instant impact on what your business shows.
