Good open source software for a manufacturing company

Hello.

I'd like to ask if anyone could recommend me a good open source manufacturing management system ?

The main features that I would need are material requirements for an production order and assembly instructions. Additionally I would also want to have the ability to write custom modules by hired local programmers.

An IT company that supports my business recommended qcadoo MES from www.qcadoo.com
They say that they are very familiar with the technologies used to create modules for it and that its very easy in this system. I'm a little unsure as the software seams quite young.

Any other options worth recommending ?

Does OpenERP have any reasonable functions for the manufacturing business ?

The problem with all of the opensource ERP systems is that they're rarely suited to any operation out-of-the-box. Every ERP project in my experience involved a lot of initial work to tailor the system to the client operation. In many cases, core modifications were required - precluding any chance of easy updates to the latest version of the source.

I'm sure there are companies out there that have successfully used an opensource ERP out-of-the-box without any fuss; but I haven't heard of any. Wish I could be of more help...
