How to use twitter for business

Nearly every business owner I have spoken too about Twitter, seems to be under the impression that the main objective is to get as many followers as you can. And blast your message out to them as often as possible.

I believe this thinking comes directly from the “get 100 hundred followers a day programs” that are popping up all over the place. Being that I have been on Twitter for over two years now, and also due to the fact that I was fortunate enough to learn how to use Twitter the correct way. I believe that this theory is seriously flawed!

What I am going to do for you in this article is explain exactly how I use Twitter for business, and how you can use Twitter to engage, interact and add value to the people you choose to follow. So that your business reaps some real benefits from you being on there.

Twitter is just a tool.

So it need to be used correctly to be effective. You wouldn’t try and cut a piece of wood with a hammer would you? Yet this is effectively what people are trying to do when they set their Twitter account up as an ATM (Automatic Tweeting Machine).

Twitter is a real time interaction tool. By that I mean that you will get the best results by actually sending all your tweets out personally, so that you can directly interact with people.

A great way to engage them is too find something that you have in common, sometimes it takes a little while but it is well worth the effort. Let me give you a great example of this that actually happened to me. I was working away one morning writing a blog post from memory, anyway the old brain got a bit distracted and I wandered over too ninemsn to see what was going on out in the real world. There was a story about a crocodile that had been trapped in a swimming hole where we used to swim as a family, when we lived in Darwin.

So I tweeted out the story something like I used to swim in this waterhole when I lived in Darwin! Within a couple of minutes I get an @ message back saying so you are a Darwin boy then? I went on to explain that I wasn’t, but built up a friendship with this person that has lead too me being invited to blog on the Coolum Beach site on the Sunshine Coast, as well as being asked to be a social media judge at an event in the future.

Twitter is also an exceptional tool for creating business connection’s, and getting around the gatekeeper who often ends up with your email’s! This is my number one Twitter tip…

If you want to speak directly to someone that you are have trouble contacting, see if they have a Twitter account. You see Twitter is a direct reflection of an individuals personality. Smart operator’s recognize this and rarely let the gatekeeper have access to their Twitter account. The added bonus is there are so many Twitter apps for phones, having some-one’s Twitter name is just as effective for contacting them as having their mobile number.

Never use Twitter as a sales tool unless…

It is someone you have known for a while and built up a friendship with or they specifically ask me to recommend a product to them.

Nothing is worse than someone trying to shove their products and services down your neck via Twitter.

Just wait until it happens to you the first time and you will know exactly what I am talking about!

    It is really about standing out in the crowd for sure!

    And gaining a true following of real fans who love you work and wait for every post. I would rather have 200 true fans then 1000 waste of timers!

    I have learn’t some valuable tips from someone the other day about what words to use with twitter (Belinda you know who you are :) )

    A very timely article for me Adam as I’ve been pondering how I use Twitter for my business. I get so many hard sales and (what I consider to be) spamming tweets that I’ve been wondering if it actually works for people.

    It doesn’t seem very endearing and it’s a “social” platform after all.

    But more than that I’ve been wondering if, aside from connecting with people and helping to establish a general online presence, Twitter will be most effective to point my followers to my (soon to exist) Blog content? Which in turn creates stronger links to my business….

    I’m interested in your thoughts as an old Tweeter (to a newbie).

    Michael you bring up a very important point.

    Twitter isn’t about the number of followers. It is about the quality of your followers, and the relationships you build with them!!

    I would go as far as to say I would rather have one quality follower, than 1000 time wasters.

    Thats been my tactic for a while Belinda, use Twitter to gain recognition for your blog and then use the blow to covertly market myself.

    Adam raises some fantastic points about not trying to push too hard for sales on twitter.

    Great Question and I am glad you asked it as it brings up a very good point.

    I don’t use Twitter as a sales tool, for the exact reason you pointed out. There are literally millions on Twitter pushing the buy this NOW angle.

    So if you do the opposite to that, you will instantly stand out as a quality person to follow and attract the high quality Tweeps that you can interact and build solid relationships with.

    Twitter is a great tool to use for promoting your blog, and you are defiantly headed in the right direction with this thinking. Just remember to mix your tweets up. By this I mean tweet about you interests news articles, RT @ message people you have things in common with.

    When you do Tweet out your blog posts, be sure to use a question that your blog post will answer, to capture interest.

    Eg with this post I might use “How to get around the gatekeeper by using Twitter” nothing Screams boring more than the old tired…

    Drawing people back to your blog with Twitter is an excellent way to market yourself and build your brand.

    If you use Twitter as an interaction tool that builds trust, people will happily check out your blog or web site without their defenses up thinking that you are going to try and do a hard sell on them.

    I have a three unfollow rules for twitter. Basically I unfollow it:

    1. The person is constantly tweeting sales stuff or it’s just all about them

    2. If someone uses an automatic Direct Message when I follow them – occasionally I give them a second chance but I monitor their tweets carefully for a few days and apply rule 1 if need be.

    3. If someone constantly ignores me – for instance, I’ve gone out of my way to find answers to questions people have asked and they haven’t acknowledged me. A simple “thanks” would do!

    As for me, I tweet my blog posts and about new testimonials I’ve added to my site, but otherwise I try not to talk about myself too much. I also try and share interesting content that I think my followers will be interested in, but most of all I love the conversational nature of twitter – the fact I can have a real-time conversation with someone anywhere in the world. Fantastic!

    You are right on the money, Twitter is an amazing way to connect with people. I doubt I would have been luck enough to connect with you and the guys from Trailer Campers if it wasn’t for Twitter.
